Trauma, Dissociation, and Authoritarianism (Save Date. Registration Opening Soon) (23 January 2027)

Save Date. Registration Opening Soon

Program Description

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Joseph Fernando, a distinguished psychoanalyst and author from Toronto, as our first presenter in NAPsaC’s 2027 series, “Spotlighting Canadian Analysts.” Dr. Fernando will describe his concept of the “zero process” as a form of mental functioning that is the breakdown of the present moment in trauma. These unconstructed bits and pieces form inner objects (introjects) which have the quality of immediate presences. He will demonstrate how zero process structures, which form the core of the superego, play a role in trauma and guilt, the transmission of culture and superego, and, on a group level, group regression and totalitarianism.

Mary Sacco, Vice President of IPSO, will provide a clinical vignette, which Dr. Fernando will use to demonstrate how the concept of zero process can be applied clinically.

Learning Objectives:

Describe the characteristics of the zero process, how they are derived from the traumatic situation, and how key characteristics of the superego connect with the zero process.

Apply knowledge of the zero process and superego to describe the nature of totalitarian groups.

Apply knowledge of the zero process and superego to craft useful clinical interventions with patients.

Dreaming the Impact of our Hyperconnectivity (Save Date. Registration Opening Soon) (13 February 2027)

REGISTRATION OPENING SOON

Program Description

We will explore how our hyperconnected world — the constant flow of information, images, and digital presence, alongside the accelerating impact of Artificial Intelligence — shapes and unsettles our collective social unconscious and the way we relate to external reality. Three Social Dreaming Matrixes.

Social Dreaming* allows participants to explore anxieties and defences without needing to rush to interpret or find solutions, thus fostering negative capability and opening and deepening horizons.

We will gather three times. Participants will share dreams and associations that talk to each other within the Matrixes, allowing new links and connections and the potential discovery of new thoughts.

The term 'Matrix' distinguishes these meetings from task-oriented groups focused on problem-solving or decision-making. In Social Dreaming, dreams and associations belong to the Matrix and offer a view of the present social unconscious.

The focus is not on the dreamers, who remain anonymous, or on the group's psychodynamics, which are not interpreted. Each Matrix will last an hour and will be followed by a half-hour Dream Reflection Dialogue to explore and identify emotions, themes, and thoughts that emerged during the Matrix.

Note: The Social Dreaming Matrix is not therapy. Participants are responsible for their own well-being

*1 Armstrong, D., 2023. The practice of social dreaming: Guiding principles.

Program Details

Dreaming the Impact of our Hyperconnectivity (Save Date. Registration Opening Soon) (20 February 2027)
