Program Description
We are delighted to welcome Dr. Joseph Fernando, a distinguished psychoanalyst and author from Toronto, as our first presenter in NAPsaC’s 2027 series, “Spotlighting Canadian Analysts.” Dr. Fernando will describe his concept of the “zero process” as a form of mental functioning that is the breakdown of the present moment in trauma. These unconstructed bits and pieces form inner objects (introjects) which have the quality of immediate presences. He will demonstrate how zero process structures, which form the core of the superego, play a role in trauma and guilt, the transmission of culture and superego, and, on a group level, group regression and totalitarianism.
Mary Sacco, Vice President of IPSO, will provide a clinical vignette, which Dr. Fernando will use to demonstrate how the concept of zero process can be applied clinically.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the characteristics of the zero process, how they are derived from the traumatic situation, and how key characteristics of the superego connect with the zero process.
- Apply knowledge of the zero process and superego to describe the nature of totalitarian groups.
- Apply knowledge of the zero process and superego to craft useful clinical interventions with patients.

Dr. Joseph Fernando (MD, FIPA) is a training and supervising analyst at the Toronto Institute of Psychoanalysis, and past Director of the Canadian Institute of Psychoanalysis. He has published papers on guilt, narcissism, and the character of the exception. His book, The Processes of Defense, won the 2010 Gradiva prize for a book on psychoanalytic theory. His second book, “A Psychoanalytic Understanding of Trauma: Post-Traumatic Mental Functioning, the Zero Process, and the Construction of Reality” was published in 2023 by Routledge in the IPA ideas and applications series. He is presently at work on a book on the deeper links between trauma, guilt, and the superego, which attempts to throw some light on issues of cultural transmission, totalitarianism, and group delusions. He has presented widely on his ideas in North America and abroad.

Continuing Education Credit Information
Credit Certificates
To receive a credit certificate, the attendee must: pre-register, pay in full, attend the session with last name clearly labeled in Zoom, and complete an online evaluation within 7 days following the program.
The evaluation link will be emailed after the program. Certificates will be emailed within 2 weeks following the event if the evaluation is completed.
Continuing Education Credits
In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by the American Psychoanalytic Association and North American Psychoanalytic Confederation. The American Psychoanalytic Association is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Other profession types will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the activity and online evaluation confirming their participation. Cancellation
Cancellations will be accepted up to 72 hours prior to the start of the first session. Refunds will be minus a 20% administrative fee. There are no refunds after the 72 hour window.
